Wayang Kulit (Shadow Puppet) Workshop
5:00pm to 6:30pm
The Philadelphia Folklore Project recently commenced work with the Indonesian community, concentrated in South Philadelphia, around the practice of traditional music and dance through the Gamelan Angklung Workshop. In addition to the gamelan, PFP is collaborating with Modero in presenting Wayang Kulit Workshop and Show by Brothers Campur.
Since 2012, the founding members of The Brothers Čampur—puppeteer Putu Rekayasa, theatre artist Sam Jay Gold, and ethnomusicologist Ian Coss—have presented a dynamic and inherently interdisciplinary art form of Wayang Kulit to audiences in both Indonesia and the United States.
Wayang Kulit Workshop: This is your chance to come behind the shadow screen and learn how all the pieces fit together. We begin by meeting the characters used in a typical shadow play—learning the backstory of Tualen the servant and the distinct voice of Hanoman the monkey king. Then we offer a demonstration of the musical instruments and their specialized repertoire that accompanies everything from love scenes to battles. With this basic understanding of the musical and theatrical elements, participants in the workshop are able to stage a short scene, working with guest artist Putu Rekayasa to develop puppetry techniques for walking, speaking, dancing, and fighting.
