Teacher's guide to In My Heart, I Am a Dancer
by Debora Kodish and Deborah Wei

book coverPart Three: Additional Lessons (K-4)

Here are some ideas for other lessons you might like to do in conjunction with the book:

  1. Make a visual timeline of Chamroeun's life, drawing pictures at different points to illustrate different things he talks about in the book.

  2. Food collage: Chamroeun talks about the importance of visual effects in preparing and serving food. Either using colored paper cut out to represent various foods, or pictures from magazines, or colored clay, have students create a "beautiful dish" of food.

  3. Trace Chamroeun's escape route using the map on page four. Have students do research to determine the length of his journey on foot and also the topography of the areas in which he had to travel.

  4. Write and illustrate a storybook based on the story of Moni Mekhala and Ramosa.

We'd love to hear your ideas as well! What lessons did you devise using this book?
